    It's a Wild World

"Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
and I'll always remember you like a child, girl"

    -Cat Stevens, "Wild World"

As I was tearing through my desk this morning, frantically looking for my keys...and my watch... and my headphones (so sometimes I'm not quite so organized), I knocked over a towering stack of CDs. The stack of CDs has been sitting on my desk untouched since 2007 or so. No lie. Each and every time I rearranged, I had carefully transported the hoard of case-less scracthed and dusty CDs. With and iPod and an iPhone, I never really felt the need to spend hours sorting through them.

And this morning as they pinged around on the bare tile, I ignored my initial (read: lazy messy bum) thought to push them under my desk with a few swipes of the feet and deal with them later. Instead, I scooped up the stray CDs and threw them in my work tote, figuring I could attempt to spice up my work playlist.

Once in the car, I dug my hand deep into the tote and wound up with the "How to Deal" soundtrack. I thought once (okay, twice.) about throwing it back in and looking for a CD where I could actually remember the track listing. But once again, I ignored that and ....

    HOLY NOSTALGIA, BATMAN!

a totally adorable version of a mommy and her bebe dancing to Wild World.

I bought the soundtrack the summer before I went to college. I was heading out on RV road trip with a friend and her parents. I had just had my first kiss days before with a boy who would ignore my calls and inevitably dump me the week I returned. And I spent the trip blasting track 4, Liz Phair's "Why Can't I?," on my discman. Yeah, I said discman.

And this morning as that track started up, I laughed aloud. It felt good to remember those days - good to remember the melodramatic mouthing the words in sync with Liz as I wondered how she could read the very words of my soul.

As track 4 segued into track 5, my trip down memory lane took a sudden turn. It was Beth Orton's version of the Cat Steven's classic, Wild World.

The first time I heard it, I was 17 - fresh out of high school and desperately afraid of what was to come - the change that was right around the corner. I remember being perched on the RV couch, meditating on the lyrics and nauseatingly following the yellow stripe on the asphalt as we drove home.

Today, I am 25. And if we're being honest, I'm a little bit scared of the changes that are in store for me this coming year. There are moments when I feel like I'm not strong enough or brave enough to handle the adult world. It's a subtle fear in the back of my mind that makes me wish I could see how everything works out. I effortlessly made it through the changes of college and beyond, but now I wonder how will I fare through year 25?

But maybe these feelings are a good thing.
Maybe fear keeps us on our toes?
Maybe it forces us to deal?

    so tell me.
What's one CD/Song/Artist/Band that instantly brings you back? One that gets you thinking about whats to come?

    Howl

I started yesterday with an amazing little pow-wow with this lady - and she came bearing gifts! What a way to start my Wednesday. She had a couple of mixes made for me and one included a whole lot of Florence & the Machine. I had never heard of her but let me just say... I'M ADDICTED!

This has got to be my favorite song....

    If you could only see
The beast you've made of me
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
    Screaming in the dark
    I howl when we're apart
Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart
My fingers claw your skin, try to tempt my way in
You are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl
My fingers claw your skin, try to tempt my way in
You are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl, howl

    Now there's no holding back
    I'm making to attack
My blood is singing with your voice I want to pour it out
The saints can't help me now
    The ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground
Like some child possessed, the beast howls in my veins
    Uh-huh
I want to find you, tear out all your tenderness
    And howl, howl

    Be careful of the curse
    That falls on young lovers
It starts so soft and sweet
    And turns them to hunters

    Hunters, hunters
    Hunters, hunters
    Hunters, hunters
    Hunters, hunters

    The fabric of your flesh
    Pure as a wedding dress
Until I wrap my self inside your arms I cannot rest
The saints can't help me now
    The ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground, and howl

    Be careful of the curse
    That falls on young lovers
It starts so soft and sweet
    And turn them to hunters

A man who's pure of heart
And says his prayers by night
    May still become a wolf
When the autumn moon is bright

    If you could only see
The beast you've made of me
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
The saints can't help me now
    The ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground

    FIBF: Music Edition

    1. One song that always takes me back to my youth is "Spiderweb" by No Doubt. I remember begging my mum for my own phone line so I could get an answering machine and have the "Sorry I'm not home right now/ I'm walking into spiderwebs/Leave a message and I'll call you back" as my "message." Sadly it never happened.

    2. My first concert ever was Backstreet Boys 1999 "Millennium" Tour in New Orleans. It was a group of 5 or 6 of my friends and our mums took us on an over night trip - all the girls had floor tickets and our mums sat in a different section. It was pure teenie bopper awesomeness.

    3. If I could create my dream music festival I'd want these bands to be there: Bob Marley, Cœur de Pirate, Marc Broussard, Joshua Radin, Andrew Landon, Brett Dennen, Sons of William, Charlie Mars, Jack Johnson, GIVERS, Drew Landry, Dave Barnes, Balkan Beat Box, Jake Smith, Reeve Carney & the Revolving Band, OAR, Cedric Watson, Regina Spektor, Grupo Fantasma, Fishtank Ensemble, + so many more.

    4. The best make-out/"boot knocking" song ever is "A Ribbon" by Devendra Banhart or "Night Drive" by Jimmy Eat World.

    5. The best concert I've ever been to was...eeeek. Do I have to pick just one?? Let's do this. Best one this year was Charlie Mars & Marc Broussard at One Eyed Jacks in NOLA.

    6. A memorable musical moment for me was the weeked that PTL & I did 4 Marc Broussard/Sons of Williams concerts in 2 states/3 cities/3 days. It was just one of those weekends when you fall in love with live music all over again.

    7. The song on my iPod that's getting the most play these days is anything by Drew Landry, but more specifically "Break of Day." It's got this eerie calming quality and the rawness of his voice kills me.

    Peace, Love, & FESTIVAL

While I'm off to Houston this weekend for the Stroll for Epilepsy, I can't fight the excitement about the upcoming week.

I've already mentioned the Marc Broussard show at Blue Moon Saloon
and my cousin Matt is getting married on Friday
But what I'm most excited for is....

The official festival website describes it best:

Festival International de Louisiane is a community-based, non-profit arts organization formed in 1986 to produce an annual visual and performing arts festival celebrating the French cultural heritage of southern Louisiana – primarily a combination of French, African, Caribbean and Hispanic influences. The largest outdoor, FREE Francophone event in the U.S., the Festival places special emphasis on highlighting the connections between Acadiana and the Francophone world. Each year performing, visual and culinary artists from Europe, Africa, Canada, the Caribbean and the Americas are invited to share their talents with Louisiana artists, residents and visitors.

And y'all.... I'm soooo jazzed for this festival.
Everyone's begun looking over the schedules and comparing notes on who they're excited to see, I'm already tasting of all the local and international food vendors lined up along the streets,...Lafayette is abuzz with excitement.

The Festival drums up even more excitement with their videos on YouTube...
So I've picked a few of the ones that make me smile to share with y'all.

This one is a must watch. I see it as such a visual of how diverse the festival is and proof of how excited everyone gets.
Plus a kid I went to High School to with is in the video - I refer to him as the funniest person Ive ever met.
You can pick him out by his lopsided 'fro.

22 seconds of down-right stinkin' adorableness.

I die. Totally my favorite part of the festival as well!

An insane set a few years back by Balkan Beat Box

Cant wait to share more of the festival with y'all!

    Its About That Time Again...

Just when I start to feel like its been too long since I've gotten my Marc Broussard fix, another show pops up just around the corner.

This time around Marc will be doing his Festival International show at Blue Moon Saloon on Tuesday April 20th.

If any of y'all are in the area, Id love to see your happy smiling faces!
Whether you've seen his live show ten times or you've never even heard his music, you're in for a real treat. Come on by the merch table and tell me hi!

    Tween Confessions

    Confession y'all...

I love me some Disney Tweeners.
I do - well the sassy, wholesome ones at least.
    ((Miley need not apply.))

So tonight I'm going through my iTunes library - sorting through the most random mix of genres and trying to assemble some sort of cohesive mix for a few people that make my heart go thump thump thump. This Demi Lovato song just came up in shuffle - and its just one of those really simple songs with lyrics that make you go *le sigh* Once I found this tres adorable video of Miss Lovato singing it - I just had to share.

    Before I fall too fast
    Kiss me quick
    But make it last
So i can see how badly this will hurt me
    When you say good bye

    Keep it sweet
    Keep it slow
    Let the future pass
    And don't let go
But tonight i could fall to soon under this beautiful moonlight

    But you're so hypnotizing
You got me laughing while i sing
You got me smiling in my sleep
And I can see this unraveling
And your love is where im falling
    But please don't catch me

    See this heart
    Wont settle down
Like a child running scared from a clown
I'm terrified of what you'll do
my stomach screams just when I look at you

    Run far away
    So I can breathe
Even though you're far from suffocating me
I can't set my hopes to high
Cuz every hello ends with a goodbye

    But you're so hypnotizing
You've got me laughing while I sing
You've got me smiling in my sleep
And I can see this unraveling
Your love is where im falling
    But please don't catch me

    So now you see
    Why I'm scared
I cant open up my heart without a care
    But here i go
    Its what i feel
and for the first time in my life i know its real

    But you're so hypnotizing
You've got me laughing while I sing
You've get me smiling in my sleep
And i can see this unraveling
And your love is where im falling
    So please don't catch me

    And if this is love
    Please don't break me
    I'm giving up
    So just catch me

    I Do What I Want...

    ((via))

And today, I want to listen to a Mardi Gras Station I made on Pandora.
No ones around to judge me - even if I did accidentally drip ketchup on my sweatshirt as I was dancing through lunch.

Ladies and Gent (cause I'm sure there can't be more than a lone boy reading this thing), I have a one track mind - and right now its visions of Mardi Gras Indians and an out of this world second line.

    Sorry & a Song...

    Hey kids,

I appologize for not showing my face around here since Tuesday, but I've been feeling quite awful and exhausted lately. Its just been a blah week. Not to mention, I've been putting off my holiday shopping, so Im starting to panic.

But as I was pouting about this morning, this song came on and LyLa and I both kind of stopped in awe...

Its a beautiful song, and I feel like it's kind of turned my day around...

((not sure what the photos are from, but the song sure is pretty))

    One of my favorites

    Listen to the Darkside

Okay, so I'm usually not one to post videos on the blog but we havvvve to make an exception for this one.

After hearing how talented this kid is a million times, I finally got to see (and meet) this guy, Charlie Mars, on Saturday in New Orleans. He opened up for Marc - and I loved his set so much that I bought the album on my iPhone while I was at the show. I've been walking around today mumbling the chorus of this song to myself... It's just embedded into my brain.

    Just watch it.

You'll love the song, the video will make you smile, and Mary Louise Parker is a pretty lady.

The Menage a' Guntrum Woody Secret Society

The Menage a' Guntrum Woody Secret Society (or the MaGWSS as I'll call it from hurrr on out) had its first official meeting Tuesday night.

From afar, it seemed to be a quiet evening among three friends - a catching up of sorts over a glass of wine and then an acoustic show while sipping a beer from the tap.

But taking a closer look, you heard them them talking about tacky weddings. You witnessed a rousing game of "What the eff, biatch?!" (that's it's PG-13 Internet name), which included wondering why the woman alone at the bar felt the need to sing every single lyric, even when she didn't know them; gasping in dismay when a girl walked in dressed as an Eskimo; and pondering if the leathery cotton-topped man was actually wearing a wig. You also spied these three taking shots (on a Tuesday night?) when a surprise run in with an old E-Harmony match presented itself.

You probably thought they were clique-ish. Elitist? Loud and obnoxious?

    Agreed.

    But you know what?

    They don't care.
    They enjoyed themselves.

    Riding Through The Country

Yesterday, Gentleman Caller and I took a ride out to Lake Martin. I was a bit of a grouch after finding out he'd be busy with a trip "up north" for the next 4 days. As I sat quietly in the truck and feigned interest in the mud caked on to Bruiser's side mirror, he honked his horn at everyone we passed on the gravel road and gave them names like Donna, T-Poopsie, & Earl as if they we're his long lost cousins. I gave a half smile and told him he was crazy. He repeatedly tried to poke me in the underarm as he managed to keep hold of the wheel. I giggled. He turned his mp3 player to Colt Ford and rapped along as loud as he could while snapping the straps of his camouflage over-alls. He got me. I'm still smiling at the thought of it all.

    Enjoy a little Colt Ford.
For those of you in Louisiana, He'll be playing at The Texas Club on October 3rd. GC and I will see you there
