Yum Yum... Gimme Sum! King Cake Giveaway

It's time to face the facts. My little Dixie Lust can't do it all. I can detail carnival traditions that I've taken part of since I was a toddler. I can take you along on this year's Mardi Gras adventures with my tweets. Hundreds of uploaded photos can draw you in to the flashy metallics of the beads and dublooms. Weekly music playlists can make you want to dance in the streets along with the second line.

But you and I know both know the best way to experience something - to experience something like a true southerner is to taste it!

So! I'm so super excited to announce that every week between now and Mardi Gras I will be giving away one of these babies....

((hey hey baby Jesus!))
((so this isn't a Meche's King Cake but its all I have on such short notice. Check back next week for actual photos))

That's right. Every week between now and February 16th, Dixie Lust is going to be giving away a King Cake along with some other Mardi Gras goodies.

Everyone around here is fiercely protective of their favorite bakery when the talk turns to King Cakes. There are entire conversati...*ahem* arguments over which bakery in south Louisana has the best cake. And I'm no different. I absolutely love the King Cakes from Meche's Bakery. I grew up on them and to this day they're my go-to cake. If you win, you'll get to see what all the fuss is about!

Here's the Details:
  • A post will go up each Thursday about King Cakes.
  • Leave a comment on the King Cake Post telling me you're a follower for one entry.
  • Leave another comment answering that posts question for a second entry.
  • Post about the giveaway on any social media outlet, and leave a comment with the link to it for a third entry.
  • Each entry must be left in a separate comment, or it will all be counted as one entry!
  • No one is exempt from the contest! Anyone and everyone is encouraged to enter!
  • If you don't win one week, come back and enter the next week!
  • That weeks entry deadline is the Tuesday following the post at noon CST.
  • I will draw the winner at random and announce it at 1pm CST on Tuesday.
  • That weeks winner will have until midnight on Tuesday to send me their mailing address.
  • King Cakes will be shipped out on Wednesday and the whole thing will begin again the next day.
**I feel silly for posting this, but it must be said. I have nothing to do with the making of the king cakes, therefore, please know that Dixie Lust is not responsible for any food allergies or reactions that may occur**

Got all that?!
Good. Now enter!

This week's Q: What's one thing you're looking forward to learning about Mardi Gras?

Coming Clean...

So I've been thinking....
When I started blogging I wasn't sure how this would turn out or who would read.
So I came up with my little pen name, Kora Bruce.
Kora from my maternal grandmother Cora.
And Bruce came from my last name
& my daddy.

But these days
I'm meeting so many wonderful
and beautiful people through this blog
and I see so many of you as
true friends.

So lets go.
Bonjour pretty people.
If you weren't already aware
I'm Michelle Broussard.
Meesh. Meesha. Shell. Shelly. MBru.
and apparently... Kora Bruce.

So with my little
revelation and such.
I'm giving you guys a chance to ask me
any question that you'd like.
And I will answer them on Monday.

More About Kora Bruce & Dixie Lust

On the surface Dixie Lust will read as personal archives about living in and discovering the South. It’s a haze of fried foods at mom and pop eateries, impromptu rock and roll shows on the back porch, and grand road trips in the spirit of Jack Kerouac. It’s New Orleans, Austin, Mobile, and Savannah – as well as Bunkie, LeBeau, and Grand Isle. It’s not “indie” and it certainly isn’t “preppy” – it’s a style all of its own. Below the surface, there’s a love affair taking place that even non-southerners can identify with. Dixie Lust is a reawakened desire for the simple things in life. It’s a story about loving life exactly where you are.

Maybe it was having a Canadian friend come down for Mardi Gras and discovering just as much as she did about my culture and heritage. Maybe it was sitting alone in the grassy field, listening to Cajun French Music at Festival International de Louisianne. Maybe it was finding myself falling for a once-farmer who lives and breathes for the wide open country. I can’t pinpoint one moment where it just came to me… This year has been a changing of heart, a journey home, for me. The art, the music, the food,…the people of the south – they’ve all captured my heart in a distinctive way. Very simply, I just felt compelled to write about the simplicity of my new found love.

When I was a senior in high school, there was a scheduling glitch and I was thrown into a creative writing course. I went in with the worst attitude - thinking I couldn’t write anything worth reading. I wrote what I thought were stupid musings but my classmates identified with my work. They encouraged me to write more – and my teacher taught me technique. The more I learned and the more I read of their work, the harder I pushed myself. I fell in love with writing that year (and I ended up scoring at the top of my class!). It was such a sense of community – and to me that’s what blogging is about. It’s a positive place of learning and expressing your true self. It’s all about putting yourself out there and spreading your ideas and energy.
