South Side

"here we are now going to the south side
i pick up my friends and we hope we won't die
ride at night, ride through heaven and hell
come back and feel so well. "
"South Side" MOBY

Okay so maybe the above song has nothing to do with my delicious Friday lunch, but its stuck in my head and who doesn't love a little lyrical flair in their posts?

So theres not much to say about Southside Bakery other than it is pure palate awesomeness. From brownies to cookies to cakes - they have it everything to satisfy your sweet tooth. But my favorite part has to be their lunch menu and their gourmet burgers!

On the way over to Southside, we saw pimped out golf carts at the custom rims shop.

My delish gourmet bacon cheeseburger and french fries!

The Last Supper...errr Lunch

I haven't posted a Friday Lunch in a while. LyLa and I have been trying to make healthier choices when it comes to lunch, so we've been hitting up Zoe's Kitchen pretty often. But with my clusterfreak of a week, I was craving a little naughtiness in the form of a hamburger and fries. And after a little early morning office chaos, LyLa was on board and we ventured over to Burgersmith...

1314 Camellia Blvd.
Lafayette, LA 70506
337.504.5015

I got the "natural burger," which is some sort of organic-centric burger creation. I don't really speak "organic" so I can't really tell you much more than that. I know I know... me not having 3 paragraphs to describe a single item of food?! But being perfectly honest, it was a burger. It was really good... but not as life changing as our rendezvous with Bonnie Bell's Bistro. The fries on the other hand (butter and garlic) were absolutely delicious... amazing. But I felt so guilty eating them... like my arteries were getting increasingly clogged by the second,...

Whats wrong with me folks?
Have I lost my zest when it comes to my beloved burger?
Have I come the proverbial girl who craves healthier food since she's been eating it so much?

Oy.

Girls Gone Gourmet

Yep. I know exactly what you're thinking. How many times can this girl review a hamburger? First, let me just say that this past Friday's lunch wasn't "just burgers." Secondly, let's go back. I've got to give you the full scoop on Bonnie Bell's Bistro. I'm all about the details, folks.

Bonnie Bell's Bistro
740 Jefferson St.
Lafayette, LA 70501
337.234.229

Lyla's been on quite the roll when it comes to suggesting the next food adventure. Last week she picked Johnson's Boucaniere with the help of Urban Spoon. After browsing the Eat Lafayette website, she e-mailed me the menu for Bonnie Bell's Bistro. To be honest, since I pass by it when it's after hours, I always thought it was closed down. Not the case at all, my lovlies.

Since Bonnie Bell's is located downtown and we're a bit of a drive away with traffic, we decided to try our luck again with calling in our order ahead of time. I gave the restaurant a call around 11 am and spoke with Bonnie, who is presumably *the* Bonnie. There was a bit of a confusion about calling in a dine in order so I'm assuming its a request they don't handle too often, but Bonnie told me to call about 5 minutes before we got to the restaurant and she'd put our order in to the kitchen.

LyLa and I've discovered a new route from our office to downtown, and we were at the restaurant in less than 10 minutes. (Huzzah!) We arrived at Bonnie Bell's and let me just say... that place does a TON of business at lunch time. The place was packed. At the hostess station, we let the girl know that we'd gladly sit at the bar or get the food to go and we mentioned that we had called in our orders earlier. A flash of "ahhhhhh. you're the ones we're waiting for!" came across her face and she happily showed us to....

Yes. Our very own reserved table. At the hottest lunch spot downtown, Kora Bruce and LyLa were officially VIP's.

I've never been one to seek special treatment and normally I'm embarrassed by anything that puts me in the spotlight, but I'm telling you folks, I could get used of this sort of treatment.

We hadn't even requested reservations, yet they were kind enough to think ahead and hold one for us.

You're probably saying...big deal Kora. You got a table in a packed restaurant at high noon. Ohhh noooo mon frere. Within a minute (literally) of sitting down, our drink orders were taken and our orders were placed in front of us. Add to that, a cheery waitress who takes care of your every need and you've got two girls who feel like queens.

I won't lie. I enjoyed the bewildered/jealous looks from the neighboring tables as they wondered why they were actually waiting for their food.

So you're thinking..."The food, Kora, the FOOOOD. Tell us about the fooood!"

'Cause really what's great service without great food?

LyLa got the Carter's Crab Cake Sandwich which the menu describes as "Our popular crab cakes served on a fresh baked bun, with lettuce, tomato & garlic mayo"

Do I even need to comment on how delicious this looks?

I will say however that there was a review of the crab cakes on Urban Spoon that said there was barely any crab in the cakes - and we're here to say WRONG-O! There was lump crab meat all through out this thing!

I ordered the Mike Norris Burger. Admittedly, I ordered this just because of the name. LyLa and I happen to know someone named Mike Norris and we wondered if it was named after him.

My burger was "layered with pepper jack cheese, mango-jalapeno bacon, caramelized
red onions, roasted garlic mayo, baby greens, tomato & served on a fresh baked bun." But you know me - I scratched the onions, greens, & tomatoes.

Both burgers were served with sweet potato fries.

Now here's where I admit that Friday August 14, 2009 was the first time I have ever eaten sweet potato fries. Apparently, that's shocking news to some.

They were ...life changing.

The money shot =)

This is Lyla's "I'm so shocked at how amazingly delicious and epic this Crab Burger is" face. Although I'm sure she phrases that differently. LyLa would never say epic. But I do. And the Crab Burger at Bonnie Bell's is EPIC.

I cringe when I hear burgers described as juicy and delicious. Cause well... they're supposed to be. That's not really big news is it? (Not saying I'm not guilty of calling them such) But let me describe this burger to you... I forgot I was eating a hamburger. The mango bacon was laced with sweetness and a tiny bit of tang. The cheese was gooey and melty and blended with the roasted garlic mayo to create an explosion of pure happiness. The bun was sweet, toasted, warm bliss. And the actual hamburger patty? Oh yeah - that was cooked to perfection.

Dainty little cups of ketchup dismiss the feeling of fast-food dining where you're squeezing 86 packets of ketchup on to your burger wrapper.

I was a mess after this burger... I was literally scraping up cheese bits and mayo with bits of hamburger bun - and then licking my fingers. Some VIP I am...

Absolute carnage.

I tore this burger apart. In less than 15 minutes... because once all was said and done, we were finished at 12:30.

How much you ask? Two gourmet burgers, two sweet potato fries, and two fries for less than $25

I'm not quite sure how we do this week after week. No not the eating part (I know how we do that) - the part where we consistently pick great restaurants out of the blue. All I can say is we live in Southern Louisiana - great food is inevitable.

If Heaven Were a Sandwich....

it would be the Pulled Pork Sandwich at Johnson's Boucaniere .

As I mentioned here, the latest lunch excursion for LyLa and I was a trip to downtown Lafayette to experience Johnson's Boucaniere. And as I've said before, I don't eat fruit or veggies. So to say I love...meat... is sort of an understatement. Call me the un-vegetarian. I usually pour myself over a menu deciding which item would be the easiest and least vegetable-y thing to order but when I realized that I wouldn't have this issue at Johnson's, I could barely contain myself. No, seriously. Thursday went something like this:

Me: Hey... guess what...
LyLa: Hmm?
Me: (sing-songy voice) I'm sooo excited for lunch tomorrow!

.::five minutes later::.

Me: Ahhhhh
LyLa: What's wrong?
Me: I don't know what to order tomorrow... pulled pork sandwich or the brisket sandwich
Repeat the above at least 8 or 9 times.

What can I say? Some girls get excited about shoes or purses. I get excited about pulled pork. And that's exactly what I ordered. We were a little bit worried about only having an hour for lunch and rushing to get downtown and having to scarf down our highly anticipated lunch, so we looked at the menu online and called in our order around 10:30 am. I always like to take time to recognize and applaud friendly people in the service industry. Nothing ruins a meal like an apathetic/unhappy person serving it to you, and these days that seems to be the norm. The woman who took our phone order was FABULOUS! We didn't catch her name, but she was sooo friendly and patient with us. Totally helpful. So kudos to you.

Bricks of peanut butter fudge

HUGE porch where you can enjoy your meal

LyLa's husband Duston joined us for lunch

I'm sure he was creeped out that I demanded to take photos of him eating, but look how natural his posed "sandwich-shot" is...
haha

Duston ordered the brisket sandwich

I got the pulled pork sandwich with a side of corn

LyLa went with the grilled cheese sandwich with brisket inside

(Think I'm going to try this one next time)

Hmmm. Definitely not my salad....

Heaven, I tell you. Absolute Heaven.

Thanks to everyone at Johnson's Boucaniere for a fabulous Friday lunch.

We'll be seeing you guys soon.

Real soon.

Did Someone Say Smoked Meat?

Urban Spoon has done me proud again. My fabulous new hair (more on this later) and I are making our way to Johnson's Boucaniere today for lunch... I don't even need to cross my fingers. I just know it's going to be gooood.

The Lion said Rawr....

Thank You Urban Spoon...

You're probably sick of the Gentleman Caller coverage and you're wondering to yourself "Hey Kora...Where's the good stuff?" Well, maybe not. But I am. I've been a little skimpy on the posts the past 2 or 3 weeks. I've been trying to find my rhythm in this whole blogging thing (seeing as how this is the first blog that I've decided to keep up with) and trying to come up with some sort of layout that doesn't bore me / give me a headache. In short, I've just been trying to figure out how to make this blog "me." I've got a lot coming your way, so hopefully all goes smoothly. Advice and pointers are always welcome, especially from those of you who have been doing this a while. I'm always curious about how/why you guys blog.

So while I've skipped a few "Friday Lunch" sections, I'm back in the game. This week I was in the mood to show you guys something aside from my usual (Blue Agave, Zoe's, Pizzeria Venti) so I downloaded the Urban Spoon app on my new iPhone. I've seen it on commercials and I figured it be perfect for me since I find myself going to the same old places over and over again. Yesterday after I downloaded the app, I handed the phone over to Lyla and let her give it a shake. We shook it a couple times and it finally landed on a place we had never heard of, Pops Black Pot. We used the "Map It" function and realized it was just around the corner. No idea how we hadn't found this place before....

You guys have no idea how excited we get at the thought of a good Friday lunch. Its a little bit like the thought of Christmas morning for a 5 year old...or in the case of Marguerite, the thought of a gallon of icy cold margaritas.

Click here to see more photos from our lunch at Pops Black Pot

Lunch was absolutely fabulous. Quick, friendly service (seriously, the two girls at the counter were as sweet as can be! We even chatted about the wonder of Urban Spoon.) & yummy, well seasoned, home-cooked food.

I doubt this place is new to some of you who are well informed of the subject of great local eateries, but it was a welcome surprise to my week. If you haven't been, you need to get out there and try it!

PS. For those of you who don't have an iPhone, I've put an Urban Spoon widget on the sidebar to the left. Try it out, and see what you can come up with. And if you're feeling adventures (or hungry), go have dinner there and tell me how it is!

Regulars...

When Lyla & I were 17 or so, we used to frequent the local Bennigan's...and by frequent I mean we ate there once or twice every weekend. We'd joke that we were VIPs. All the waiters recognized us and knew our usual orders. I'm starting to think that we've reached that point again with a little Mexican restaurant in Lafayette called Blue Agave. While I stick to my usual (Tortilla Soup, Crunchy Tacos, & Flour Chips w/ Queso), Lyla likes to change it up. But trust us....you can't go wrong with anything on the menu! Everything is absolutely delicious. Here are few shots from lunch...

Feels Like Summer

Hey Boys & Girls!
Its Friday!!!! and while that means the weekend is upon us, it also means that LyLa and I got to go out of the office for lunch today. Every week it feels as though we count down our packed lunches until Friday. But for the past few weeks, we've been in a bit of a rut - cycling between 3 or 4 of the usuals. Don't get me wrong, I love a healthy heaping of Mexican or Italian as much as the next girl, but it was just time for a change. It's been in the upper 90's all week and we're dying for some sort of vacation, so LyLa suggested Zoës Kitchen in River Ranch. We ate outside at one of the shady tables, enjoyed the weather - and possibly pretended we were on vacation.

LyLa excited about the change in scenery + the great "beach weather"

I ordered the Turkey Sandwich, Potato Salad, & Baked Lays

Topped it all off with Limeaid in a jazzy "sports cup"

LyLa got the Greek Pita, Pasta Salad, & Baked Lays

Seriously. The perfect light lunch for a exhaustingly hot day - doesn't leave you feeling like you can't move.
