Evacuation Nation in Full Effect

Yesterday afternoon there was an ~~explosion in the Gulf~~ chemical explosion less than a mile from my house. Multi Chem, a company that makes chemicals for oilfield use, had a little clusterfreak that resulted in this:

So in the meantime, I'm under evacuation.

With road closures and evacuation notices, the rest of the family and my puppy are in New Iberia while I've been somewhat stuck in Lafayette.

I'm cranky. I'm tired. And I'm not sure if my makeshift Target outfit is a dress or a beach cover-up.

That being said,
I have amazing friends.

Elitists: Day Two of Brewmasters International Beer Festival

Yesterday, I caught you guys up on Day 1 of the Brewmasters International Beer Festival that SKing and I attended last September.

Today, I'm bringing you Day Two - also known as VIP Day.

If you guys don't remember, I entered a Twitter Contest for VIP Tickets to the Brewlicious Beer & Food Tasting event.

SKing and I loaded up the Audi once again and headed back down to Galveston.

We first met up with @JoshInHouston for our VIP Passes and some free Nikita Swag!

We headed into the Moody Gardens Ballroom, a little nervous and shy -until we saw the Applewood Bacon Wrapped Quail with a Pomegranate Glaze made by the chefs at Bernardo's. We. Love. All. Things. Quail. We washed it down with a sampling of New Belgium Mother Ship Wit, an organic wheat beer.

Next was Hofbrau Dunkel paired with Baby Short Ribs, Polenta, and Micro Greens by the folks at South Shore Harbor Resort

As we have a special place in our hearts for cider beer (our friendship truly began over pints of Wood Chuck Amber) we saw the Harpoon Hottie and thought it was a match made in heaven. Once we made our way over to the booth, we learned a few important lessons. Mainly, all cider beers were not created equal and the booth with the hottest rep usually has the worst beer. I believe our review was along the lines of "dirty dish water." Yech!

We'll cam-whore in a crowded room, no worries.

There were seminars throughout the day, hilarious booth workers, and of course our beloved Woodchuck paired with eclairs and other sweets from Moody Gardens.

We circled around a bit before we found this booth, but finally we found the Citrus Pork Belly Lollipop on a Sugar Cane Stick from Voice Restaurant & Lounge. I read about it online beforehand and couldn't wait to try it. This was hands-down our favorite dish. It was paired with St. Arnold's Elissa IPA which is made right in Houston.

We also got to try some sliders and empanadas!

We also spotted Abita's SOS: Save Our Shore as we made a few new friends.

All in all, it was the perfect laid back follow up to Brewmasters International Beer Festival Day 1. SKing and I not only enjoyed all the yummy beer and food pairings, but thanks to my contest winning entry, we also got to enjoy VIP treatment that included larger tasting glasses, a special VIP seating area, and early entry.

With September drawing closer, you can bet we're already making plans to attend this year's festival.

Lushes: Day One of Brewmasters International Beer Festival

Since SKing and LMac spent the weekend relaxing away in Galveston, TX , I thought one of my first catch up (read: I have 10 months of happenings to fill you in on) posts should be about SKing & I's trip to the First Annual Brewmasters International Beer Festival in Galveston back in September.

For some added company, we had Nate and Ninja meet us at Moody Gardens for the event. Once the boys arrived, we walked through the event doors and were given a sampling mug and a punch card.

The room was filled wall to wall with sampling booths - arranged by brewing company. Each brewing company brought a few of their favorite beers for us to sample, which was a little overwhelming at first since there were literally HUNDREDS of beers. Eventually, we just started asking the brewery representatives to serve us up a sample of their favorite.

The entire day was a blur - both in the sense that it flew by and we drank quite a bit. hahah

That being said, I'll leave you guys with photos from the day....

Post Brewmasters, we had dinner at Gaidos - yeah I'm really not sure how it's pronounced - where I somehow lost a contact in the sink.

Since I wear circle lenses it was a total "Hello Hot Mess" moment...

That's right folks, this weekend marked the two year anniversary of my first post.

Taking a little time off from blogging recently hasn't made this two year mark any less special - because we've been keeping Dixie Lust going strong in spirit over here.

I started this blog as a way to show not only y'all but myself as well all that the South has to offer. No more "I'm bored", "There's nothing to do around here....", or "I wish I lived in a cooler city." The possibilities are endless - some of them just need to be re-discovered.

And we're here to do just that.

In the spirit of renewed dedication to blogging, MTher, LyLa and I got together Saturday to work on a few new video features for Dixie Lust. Before we called it a night, we made a little wish and had some cake.

Give the People What They Want

Trust me - I'm just as shocked as you are right now.

Shock & Awe

Yes - after 10 or so months - I am finally blogging again.

This past Saturday, I broke myself away from newest committed relationship - Netflix and Napping - to hit up the Cajun Heartland State Fair with MTher, Sking, and our newest addition, LMac.

Before we made our way to the fair, we stopped by La Fonda's for dinner and their legendary margaritas.

Some of the best frozen margaritas I've ever had.

While at dinner, SKing mentioned she showed little ole Dixie Lust to LMac earlier in the day and that launched everyone into a "Bring Back Dixie Lust" campaign.

What can I say, I'm a people pleaser. I have heard their cries for more Gulf-Coast-goodness, so here it is folks.

I'm back.

This week as I get the blog back in shape, I'll be bringing you bits and pieces from old adventures. I've got quite a lot of back logged photos and videos that I'd love to share with everyone.

Ye Olde Renaissance Faire

Last year, a dear friend of mine from high school, Miss Ashley B, went to the Texas Renaissance Festival and wrote me up a lovely guest post on the experience complete with tons of photos. But since I never got a chance to post it up for you guys and I'll be having my own Texas Renaissance Festival outing this Saturday, I thought now would be a perfect time to post it up - Hope you guys enjoy!! xo KB

I have always wanted to go to the Renaissance Festival ever since high school. The honors classes always scheduled a trip to Plantersville, Texas, where the nation’s biggest Ren Fest is held annually- eight weekends out of the year. Unfortunately, my dad never let me go because it was “too expensive.” For some reason, I find it hard to believe 40 dollars is a hefty sum. But I digress.

A few months ago my husband, Tyler, picked up a Renaissance brochure from Albertsons just to do it. I guess because he knows I’m obsessed with medieval times and anything before the eighteenth century. As soon as I saw it I thought, “Holy Sh*t! I forgot about this thing!” and looked at all of the dates. One of the weekends just so happened to fall the day after my birthday – October 17th, and 18th- the Fairy and Elves themed weekend. Close enough.

We decided to only go the Saturday just to see if we would like it (could handle it). We drove up to Lake Charles, Louisiana from Baton Rouge the night of my birthday – the 16th. In doing this, we broke up the trip almost in half just to cut up the five and a half hour drive. We ate sushi with his family and had cake…and blah blah blah – now the Renaissance Festival. ** angels break into chorus**

My husband decided that night along with friend Mike and little brother Paul, to dress up. They hadn’t previously planned this, but since my costume was so epic they would have looked like idiots. The costumes they made didn’t exactly change that, but they tried, and it was a cute effort – kind of. Just kidding.

They stayed up until 2:30 am sewing their own crests onto Wal-Mart shirts (heyo!). I went to bed at 1:30 just watching this spectacle. That was a bad idea considering I had to wake up at 5am to braid my hair and do my makeup. They woke up at 6am. So basically we got the same amount of sleep. Yippee. We left at 7am, an hour later than we wanted to. It all turned out okay; we got there just a little later than expected.

When we arrived at the gate – we arrived at pure awesomeness. Turns out the people who don’t dress up look like the uninterested stand-outers. The moment we walked in, “Ann Boleyn” got up in our grills and we looked like deer in the headlights. I guess we weren’t expecting the old English accent right off the bat and it caught us off guard. She asked, “ Are ye lookin’ fuh me?” First I said to myself, “ I thought Ann Boleyn spoke more elegantly than this?” Then Tyler, Mike and Paul all just nodded. Assholes. She went on to tell us about the jousting match and what section of the crowd she will be sitting in. We didn’t go to the jousting until 3pm.

There were a lot of awesome characters walking around. I have given Kora a few of the ones I took pictures with, and some that I snuck photos of. You can tell in some of them because they have a look on their face (helmet) like they just caught a small medieval castle peasant stealing an apple. One looked as though I stole his soul. Oh well, I got the picture.

The first thing on my agenda was to buy a turkey leg. Of course we went to the place that was the only shop that didn’t carry turkey legs. Now, I’ve heard from everyone that has went, to get a darned turkey leg and I’ll be damned if I didn’t get one. The bartender wench said that most of the food stores have them and just to look around. Well I guess we were blind because soon after we turned the corner all we saw were giant wooden turkey leg signs. DOH! Tyler bought us each a turkey leg, and it was glorious. I also supplied Kora with these sweet pics.

We mainly walked around the entire day because there was so much to see (and buy). They had rows upon rows of costume shops. Since there are different themed weekends, such as pirates, gypsies, Scottish clans, elves and fairies, Halloween and Christmas, each shop had different types of clothes. They had a store for wooden mugs, silver mugs and you –name-it-they-had-it mugs. They sold colorful hand carved staves, wooden chairs, authentic micro-suede capes, scarves, candles… I mean anything, and that was just the “trade district.” That’s what I’ll call it for now. In the Mage Quarter, and that’s what it’s actually called, they had “Drench a Wench.” This was the medieval style dunking booth. She said typical trash talking things and so on. They also had a guy locked in the stocks that you could throw tomatoes at. He said some pretty nasty things such as “hey honey if I had a face like that I’d paint it too.” Below the belt, but funny. The Mage Quarter was pretty much an entire section of games and crafts. You could also shoot bows and arrows, throw ninja stars, toss maces and axes, and fish in ponds.

The chapel section of the 56 acre theme festival was very pretty. They are totally legit chapels and there was actually a wedding held that day. We saw the procession of the bride and groom coming from the Trade District. The chapels had vines growing all around them and they were also near a courtyard with a fountain. Very cool.

One of the shows we saw was the “Ded Bob Show”. He was like Jeff Dunham the ventriloquist comic on Comedy Central except the man had a mask over his face. That definitely defeats the purpose, but his comedic improve more than made up for it. He called on members of the audience to embarrass them and thank God he didn’t call on me. PHEW. Sorry guys, no pics, I was too nervous he would get me on stage. The jousting show was “different”. I was expecting some spectacular reenactments, but I guess these guys were retirees of the Medieval Times restaurant because they kind of sucked. They completely whiffed when going to lance the other knight and purposefully threw themselves off of their horses. It was almost comical, so I let it slide. I wasn’t going to let it ruin my awesome adventure.

One of the last places we went to was the cape store because it looked like capes from Lord of the Rings of course. They even had little leaf brooches. Shut up- it’s cool. The guy working the counter inquired about Tyler and his friend’s crest and asked if they were “part of a thing”. I laughed. On the inside. Mike followed with, “Oh no man, we made these.” He pointed to each of them as he said, “I made mine, he (Tyler) made his, oh and (Paul) his mom sewed his.” THEN, I laughed. Poor kid. The guy seemed a little too amazed for comfort, and then proceeded to tell us how he wears his cape every day. Awkward.

That about sums up my day at the Renaissance Festival. We’ll probably go every year now because I had that much fun. I also got a Renaissance Festival 2009 ceramic mug out of it, so it’s all good. The next one on our list is probably the Christmas one because they apparently deck the town out in lights and stuff. The town stays up all year; they just maintain it in the off season I guess. We didn’t get a chance to see the rest of the craft stores such as the candle making and glass blowing stands. We also didn’t get to explore the Magic Gardens section. Now I know what’s first on the list next year! OH, and they had an armory museum, it was cool. The end.

As I was tearing through my desk this morning, frantically looking for my keys...and my watch... and my headphones (so sometimes I'm not quite so organized), I knocked over a towering stack of CDs. The stack of CDs has been sitting on my desk untouched since 2007 or so. No lie. Each and every time I rearranged, I had carefully transported the hoard of case-less scracthed and dusty CDs. With and iPod and an iPhone, I never really felt the need to spend hours sorting through them.

And this morning as they pinged around on the bare tile, I ignored my initial (read: lazy messy bum) thought to push them under my desk with a few swipes of the feet and deal with them later. Instead, I scooped up the stray CDs and threw them in my work tote, figuring I could attempt to spice up my work playlist.

Once in the car, I dug my hand deep into the tote and wound up with the "How to Deal" soundtrack. I thought once (okay, twice.) about throwing it back in and looking for a CD where I could actually remember the track listing. But once again, I ignored that and ....

HOLY NOSTALGIA, BATMAN!

I bought the soundtrack the summer before I went to college. I was heading out on RV road trip with a friend and her parents. I had just had my first kiss days before with a boy who would ignore my calls and inevitably dump me the week I returned. And I spent the trip blasting track 4, Liz Phair's "Why Can't I?," on my discman. Yeah, I said discman.

And this morning as that track started up, I laughed aloud. It felt good to remember those days - good to remember the melodramatic mouthing the words in sync with Liz as I wondered how she could read the very words of my soul.

As track 4 segued into track 5, my trip down memory lane took a sudden turn. It was Beth Orton's version of the Cat Steven's classic, Wild World.

The first time I heard it, I was 17 - fresh out of high school and desperately afraid of what was to come - the change that was right around the corner. I remember being perched on the RV couch, meditating on the lyrics and nauseatingly following the yellow stripe on the asphalt as we drove home.

Today, I am 25. And if we're being honest, I'm a little bit scared of the changes that are in store for me this coming year. There are moments when I feel like I'm not strong enough or brave enough to handle the adult world. It's a subtle fear in the back of my mind that makes me wish I could see how everything works out. I effortlessly made it through the changes of college and beyond, but now I wonder how will I fare through year 25?

But maybe these feelings are a good thing.

Maybe fear keeps us on our toes?

Maybe it forces us to deal?

Maybe that above section sounds like a clusterfreak of self-help and new age-iness, but it's honestly and truely where I am in life. Let's call it what it is... a quarter-life crisis. I'm at the point where having a great job and fabulous friends is great but theres an undeniable desire for more - to reap the most I can from the life and the opportunities I've been given.

A close friend told me recently, "Often times, the things you ask of others.... God may be asking you to do."

And that hit me like a brick.

I so often see the opportunities available to others and expect them to take full advantage and push themselves to be great.

But I've been slacking in my own life.

I'm working on the personal life and the professional one as well, but the one we're discussing now is my blogging life.

I started this blog as a way to share my love for the people and the culture of the Gulf Coast. I've been blessed with so many people who are willing to read and to provide feedback. I've been given the chance to create and nurture friendships that inspire me and challenge me. I've let my perfectionism and being stuck inside my head prevent me from accomplishing my original purpose... And I feel like I need to be more assertive in my pursuit of all that blogging brings.

Don't know how this comes across to y'all

but I have to say the honesty already has me inspired

and I'm vowing to bring you more of my lust for adventure.

I got these babies at a little clothing shop at the Town Center Mall while in Boca. While I absolutely love them, today's the first day that I attempt to wear them because well... two things are irking me.

1. They're incredibly white. Like blinding white. Like I'm not scene/hip/hop enough to rock shoes this white.
Since it rained all night, and its supposed to pour later, I figured today's the day!

2. They're blank. My issue isn't that I can't think of something to fill in the blank, it's that I have waaaaay too many things that would suit the empty space just fine... How could I choose just one or two?

If you kids were wondering where I was all day, I spent my morning racing to finish my packing and the remainder of the day on the road. That's right. My roadtrip with SKing to Boca Raton started TO-DAY!

We're spending the night in Tallahassee, and driving the remaining six hours tomorrow. We've managed to squeeze in a ton of fun and a smidge of randomness - mainly some "menz" at the Wal-Mart in Chipley, FL & countless jokes about Climax, GA - but it's been a long one and tomorrow comes early...

I spent a good part of my Sunday scouring Books a Million for a few books I could take along to Boca - cause lets face it, one of the best parts of beaching it up is getting lost in a really good book. My problem is that I only found one book that really caught my eye, The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff ... and cover drew me in so much that I read the back four times on the way home. Then I let myself read the first chapter when I got home - but only the first chapter I promised. Well, if you know anything about me, know this - I don't really "do" patience nor do I "do" self-restraint. The first chapter turned into me reading all 500+ pages in one sitting.

I'm Boca-bound in 3 days and book-less...

So please, dear lusty ones....

So if you've followed for a little bit, you know I'm a teensie bit diabetic and have been having a teensie bit of trouble adjusting to the new lifestyle that October's diagnosis brought about... Okay so maybe we can hold the teensies.

Over the past ten months I've been working with an amazing internist (shout out to Dr. Blappert & his staff!) and a few wonderful counselors. I've gone from a girl who wouldn't touch a single piece of fruit or a vegetable to someone who's willingly eating whole wheat and spinach before she squeezes in a work-out.

It been a rough transition, but I went in for my lab results yesterday and got news thats worth it.

1. My weight is down!

2. My A1C is way below a 6! Normal!

3. I only have to go in for 2 checkups a year

4. If I keep up my eating and exercising, I'll never be put on insulin shots!

Its been a rainy Sunday afternoon and cabin fever set in about an hour ago - just as I decided that all the clothing in my drawers need to be refolded and color-coded. Okay so maybe its not cabin fever and more like a mild case of OCD - but whatevs. The point is on a scale of Britney eating at Johnny Rockets to seeing Jason Bateman and Dustin Hoffman kisscam, I wound up at Japanese T-Shirt Folding.

2. The best trip I've ever taken was to 12 or so cities in Italy when I was 15. I went wit LyLa and our friend Brooke. While the trip was one of those life changing experiences, my sense of style was anything but... I scraped up some photos for your enjoyment. Capris in Capri? Check. Old Navy fanny pack? Mhmmm. Inability to smile stemming from fear of something stuck in my braces? Ohhh yes.

3. The most important items to take on a road trip are Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis. Duh.

5. If I had to pick one CD to listen to for a long road trip it would be OAR's Any Time Now, Disc 2. The entire CD makes me want to put my feet on the dash, roll down the windows, and scream at the top of my lungs as I shake my hair free. It's instant feel good - and isn't that what road trips are all about?

6. The biggest disaster I've ever encountered while traveling was my first time traveling alone. I was on my way home after my first summer in Maine. My flight was delayed 8 hours before they decided to bus us to a New Hampshire airport and reroute me. That flight to Detroit was delayed, and I showed up to my connecting flight to New Orleans just as they were closing the cabin doors. I was denied entry onto the plane and had to spend the night alone in Detroit with no luggage. The next morning as I waited for my flight to New Orleans, I lost my license while shopping for Motown souvenirs. I had to wait for it to be found before I could get on my flight home.

1. One song that always takes me back to my youth is "Spiderweb" by No Doubt. I remember begging my mum for my own phone line so I could get an answering machine and have the "Sorry I'm not home right now/ I'm walking into spiderwebs/Leave a message and I'll call you back" as my "message." Sadly it never happened.

2. My first concert ever was Backstreet Boys 1999 "Millennium" Tour in New Orleans. It was a group of 5 or 6 of my friends and our mums took us on an over night trip - all the girls had floor tickets and our mums sat in a different section. It was pure teenie bopper awesomeness.

If I could create my dream music festival I'd want these bands to be there: Bob Marley, Cœur de Pirate, Marc Broussard, Joshua Radin, Andrew Landon, Brett Dennen, Sons of William, Charlie Mars, Jack Johnson, GIVERS, Drew Landry, Dave Barnes, Balkan Beat Box, Jake Smith, Reeve Carney & the Revolving Band, OAR, Cedric Watson, Regina Spektor, Grupo Fantasma, Fishtank Ensemble, + so many more.

4. The best make-out/"boot knocking" song ever is "A Ribbon" by Devendra Banhart or "Night Drive" by Jimmy Eat World.

5. The best concert I've ever been to was...eeeek. Do I have to pick just one?? Let's do this. Best one this year was Charlie Mars & Marc Broussard at One Eyed Jacks in NOLA.

6. A memorable musical moment for me was the weeked that PTL & I did 4 Marc Broussard/Sons of Williams concerts in 2 states/3 cities/3 days. It was just one of those weekends when you fall in love with live music all over again.

7. The song on my iPod that's getting the most play these days is anything by Drew Landry, but more specifically "Break of Day." It's got this eerie calming quality and the rawness of his voice kills me.

Move on over iPhone, I've got a new inanimate object to commit my affections to.
This hot little thang finally made its way to my doorstep yesterday, and to say I'm in lust is a complete understatement.
We've reached a point where I'm handing off the purse to various folks and asking them to "work it" so I can admire it from afar as I note the quality of the leather and the absolute genius that are the zippered compartments.
Best part of all? I didn't have to hock a kidney on the black market to afford her. (Yes, I'm now assigning gender to the bag) I got this $180 bag for less than $50 through what can only be described as a label whore's best friend, Ideeli.

So theres not much to say about Southside Bakery other than it is pure palate awesomeness. From brownies to cookies to cakes - they have it everything to satisfy your sweet tooth. But my favorite part has to be their lunch menu and their gourmet burgers!

On the way over to Southside, we saw pimped out golf carts at the custom rims shop.

While I'm off to Houston this weekend for the Stroll for Epilepsy, I can't fight the excitement about the upcoming week.

I've already mentioned the Marc Broussard show at Blue Moon Saloon

and my cousin Matt is getting married on Friday

But what I'm most excited for is....

FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE LOUISIANE!

The official festival website describes it best:

Festival International de Louisiane is a community-based, non-profit arts organization formed in 1986 to produce an annual visual and performing arts festival celebrating the French cultural heritage of southern Louisiana – primarily a combination of French, African, Caribbean and Hispanic influences. The largest outdoor, FREE Francophone event in the U.S., the Festival places special emphasis on highlighting the connections between Acadiana and the Francophone world. Each year performing, visual and culinary artists from Europe, Africa, Canada, the Caribbean and the Americas are invited to share their talents with Louisiana artists, residents and visitors.

And y'all.... I'm soooo jazzed for this festival.

Everyone's begun looking over the schedules and comparing notes on who they're excited to see, I'm already tasting of all the local and international food vendors lined up along the streets,...Lafayette is abuzz with excitement.

This one is a must watch. I see it as such a visual of how diverse the festival is and proof of how excited everyone gets.

If y'all remember, I asked you guys to keep little Ethan in your prayers a few weeks ago.

Ethan gave us all a scare with his ICU stay.

I just want to thank you all for your kind words, selfless thoughts, and heartfelt prayers.

In his stay at Texas Children's Hospital, Ethan was diagnosed with Epilepsy.

While its something that no family should have to go through, he is on medicine to control his seizures. His Nanny (my pretty-much-why-hasn't-my-brother-proposed-yet? sister in law) Hillary has kept us in the loop with videos of him cooing and laughing, photos of his handsome little grin, and email updates on his progress.

This Saturday, the Epilepsy Foundation of Houston is having it's annual Stroll for Epilepsy at the Houston Zoo. Baby Ethan's family has come together to form a team - parents, grandparents, aunts, and friends...even me. We hope to raise both awareness of Epilepsy and money for research and programs.

First off... I had beignets for breakfast. Need I explain why I'm such a fabulous mood?

UPDATE: Thanks to my Southern Soul Sister Summer (S much?) for explaining in the comments how to properly pronounce beignets!

Secondly, I'm getting my dixie-lovin' booty on the proverbial bandwagon and doing the lovely Lauren's Fill In the Blank Friday. Eeee! So excited...

1. If I could medal in an Olympic event it would be something from the Summer Olympics. The cold-weather boycott is back up and running - who wants to practice in the cold all day? Maybe I could be a gymnast or a diver - I'd like to fly through the air.

2. If I was stranded on a deserted island I'd take a handsome twangy manly boy to get on that man stuff, my Olliekins, my cameras, and a sketchbook... oh and a boat?

3. Creepers & Crowds are my most irrational fear.

4. I'd rather sweat everyday, than freeze everyday. ((betcha didn't see that one coming did ya?))

5. I am completely and utterly excited about my 3 day weekend of productivity ahead.

About a month ago, I went to my new favorite shoppers-disneyland, Perkins Rowe, and picked up this little lady at the UrbOut.

As I was searching for the internet for a formal explanation of King Cakes, I came to the realization that sometimes the all-knowing internet... just doesn't know.

As I was searching for an articulate bit on the symbolism of the Baby Jesus that gets hidden in each cake, I've read some people saying if you get the baby you'll get "knocked up" (yes...thats the terminology used) or some even saying that the baby is bad luck and to avoid it!

Um. Hi. We're the South.

For the most part, we're a friendly happy people who wish you well.

Trust me! You WANT to get the baby in your slice!

Finding a little plastic baby in your slice of cake grants you the title of King/Queen of the party!

((But with great power comes great responsibility! Get the baby and it's your job to bring the king cake to the next party!))

As you already know, I absolutely love sharing bits of my upbringing and culture with others. So when my Canadian friend Jess came down last year for Mardi Gras - I had a list of things that she hadddd to experience.

First up? King Cake.

And in order to let her get the full experience, I not so stealthily hid Baby Jesus in her slice. And then I told her about it. If you're not on the lookout for him, Jesus can be a bit of a choking hazard.

Insanity ensued as we exchanged not so politically correct jabs at each other's religions - "You do realize you're licking icing and sprinkles of your Lord and Savior, right?"

And in a hazy moment of truce and genius, we decided to make King Cake Baby our third wheel for the weekend....
